Prioritized Daily Task

Up at 6 AM, had personal prayer, shower, and shaved.  Max took his turn and we had breakfast provided here at the Americas Best Value Inn. We drove down the hill about a mile to "Ark Encounter", an amusement park in Williamston, Kentucky.  The ark is 510 ft. long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high, just a little smaller than the Titanic Ocean Liner that sank in April 1912.

The amusement park owned by Answers in Genesis, the CEO is Ken Ham from Australia.  I took some pictures and sent them to some of the family.

Max and I left the park before 11 AM and drove less than 5 miles on I-75 toward Lexington and the left rear tire blew out.  Max and I could not get the lug nuts off the rim.  I almost broke the lug wrench.  I called Liberty Mutual our auto insurance roadside assistance and was getting them to send assistance when Deputy Lee Jacobs of the Grant Count Sheriff's Office stopped.  He was familiar with the lug wrench and adapted it to withstand the torque.  When he had loosened all the lug nuts I called Liberty Mutual's roadside assistance and had them cancel the request to send someone out to help.  Office Jacobs stayed with us and helped get the tire changed.  He followed us to the first exit and tightened the lug nuts.  I called Alamo Car Rental and explained what had happened.  They arranged for me to drop the Ford off at the Alamo Car Rental office at the Lexington Airport and pick up a Chevrolet 4 door sedan very similar to the Ford I turned in.  Max and I stopped at a gas station before entering the airport and filled the Ford with gas before turning it in.

I called Debbie and Jack was over for a day with Grandma.  She is leaving tomorrow morning and flying to Atlanta, GA.

We stopped south of Knoxville, TN, and had dinner at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant.  Max and I got home before 9 PM and Debbie had dinner ready and waiting for us.  I ate again.

March 27, 2021

Dear Sheriff Brian Maines,

Yesterday my friend and I were leaving Williamstown.  We were on I-75 heading back to our families in Georgia when a tire exploded.  We pulled over to the side of the interstate and took our spare tire out of the trunk of the rental car.  We attempted to remove the flat tire, but the lug nuts were put on with high torque and we could not loosen them without breaking the lug wrench provided in the rental car.  (We did not know fold the handle back and double its strength.)

I do not know if it was by chance or Deputy Lee Jacobs was dispatched to assist us.  We did not make any calls to your dispatcher; someone else traveling and seeing us on the side of road with our warning lights flashing may have.  My friend is 76 years of age and I am 77.  We are married with many children and grandchildren and were in a dangerous situation yesterday.  My friend and I are not ready at this time to leave this world.

Your deputy parked his patrol car behind us and kept his lights flashing to provide protection from coming traffic.  He knew how to use the lug wrength and changed the tire for us.  The spare tire was smaller than the other tires on the car.  He warned us not to drive the car over 55 miles per hours and not drive on it for a long distance.   He followed us to the first exit we came to and checked the lug nuts to make sure they were still tight.

Deputy Lee Jacobs was very courteous and helpful.  My friend, Max Kimball, and I both feel he went above and beyond the call of duty.  We want you to know the kind of example he sets for you, your county and your state.

Best regards,

James L. McAlpin
