This morning before I went to the gym we read supplemental material on D&C Section 6,7, 8, and 9 for this week's Come Follow Me lesson schedule.  (Debbie and I have read the Doctrine and Covenants for this year. We are starting over and covering the additional lesson materials.
More than 22 percent of the Doctrine and Covenants mentions Oliver Cowdry.
This period of time in the late 1820 was when people had believed in magic before the time of enlightenment.  There is no record of the exact number of visits from the Angel Moroni, but 22 have been documented.
The past is a foreign country and when you visit you need to know what the people were like and how they did things. (I have been trying to do this with some of the books I have been reading such as William Bartram book on his travels in the southern colonies of Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas in the 1770s.)
Before you ask the Lord for revelation or direction, you need to ask 3 questions first.
1.  Why do you want to know?
2.  If God gave me direction now, am I willing to follow the direction.
3.  What difference would it make in my life if I could hear and recognize the voice of the Lord on a continuous basis.
During the year some of the lesson support material will come from eleven Gospel Topic Essays.
I want to read and study these 11gospel essays in the Church Library:   Are Mormons Christians?  Becoming like God.  Book of Mormon and DNA Studies.  Book of Mormon Translations.  First Vision Accounts.  Joseph Smith's Teaching about Priesthood, Temple, and Women.  Mother in Heaven. Peace and Violence among the 19th-Century Latter-day Sants.  Plural Marriage in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Race and the Priesthood.  Translation and Historicity of the Book of Abraham

I talked to Kevin Stedman at Universal Genealogy Center, mobile 801-798-8111, work 801-531-0701. They charge $60 an hour - I am authorizing 25 hours for July to work on this.
I sent him the following email:
Dear Kevin,
As I told you on the phone, I found a deed from Robert McCalpin and his wife Jenat dated about 1711 (I think).  The deed was for property on Mill Street that backs us to Mill Creek and next to a tannery owned by John McCalpin in Belfast, Ireland.
These names are the same names, John, Robert and my Alexander, found in the same area of Long Cane Creek Carolinas in the 1750s.
The first record found so far of Alexander was 1757 when he was a Lieutenant in the South Carolina militia.  He had land on the Watereee River above the Catawba towns.  This was in South Carolina in an area below what is now Charlotte, North Carolina.  There is a McAlpine Creek just south of Charlotte.  Tradition says the creek was named for Robert McAlpin.
Alexander was married and had a child by 1757.
Alexander had 6 sons (Robert, Solomon, Alexander, Thomas William David, Samuel Major Temple and William Alexander) and 6 daughters (Janet/Janette, Elizabeth Barbara, Mary, Sarah Temple, Anne Green and Patsy) and from his will we know he was educated, could read and write.  He wanted his children to be taught English and Arithemetick.
I do not know who his first wife, and maybe a second wife, was but his last wife Mary Moore Hagggard, married about 1777 is who my direct line follows through William Alexander McAlpin.
Much of the information I have contributed to Family Search over the years has been taken out.  The deed I found in November 2013 in Dublin, Ireland where Robert and Jenat sold property on Mill Street in Belfast is one example.
I donated to the Family History Center in SLC a 735 page book, McAlpin(e) Genealogies 1730-1990 that my cousin Doris McAlpin Russell organized and put together that is pretty well documented.
She does some speculations that may not be correct.
Please give July Sckaut my contact information.
Best regards,
James Leonard McAlpin
